The characteristics, preparation methods, and melting process of fused magnesia

Periclase is a magnesium oxide mineral and a major constituent of the Earth's deep mantle, with a melting point of 2800℃. It serves as a high-quality raw material for manufacturing various refractory bricks and non-conductive materials. Fused magnesium is a high-quality refractory material, a product of high-temperature electrofusion furnaces, characterized by its high melting point, oxidation resistance, strong slag resistance, high thermal stability, good heat retention performance, and good conductivity at high temperatures. Electrofusion periclase is a crystalline magnesium oxide belonging to the cubic lattice equiaxed crystal system. It has a very high melting point, with pure magnesium oxide having a melting point of 2800℃, but its melting point decreases when other substances are present. Additionally, magnesium oxide is an alkaline material, relatively stable under alkaline conditions but unstable under acidic conditions.

The preparation process of electrofusion periclase involves electrofusion. According to China's resource situation, the main raw material used to produce electrofusion periclase is magnesite, but these raw materials contain many impurities, including CaO, SiO2, Fe2O3, and Al2O3, which have different melting points. Electrofusion periclase takes advantage of this difference, heating impurities with different compositions to high temperatures (greater than 3000℃) through electric arcs in different types of electrofusion furnaces, and then melting them at their respective melting points in sequence. As the temperature continues to rise, low-melting impurities melt first and move outward, continuously precipitating out, thereby improving the purity of magnesium oxide. During the electrofusion process, a series of physical and chemical changes such as heating, melting, crystallization, crystal growth, and cooling occur, preparing fused magnesia with various physicochemical properties. The main material for the electric arc furnace used in fused magnesium production is ore for submerged arc furnaces, and the melting material is mainly heated by electrodes and the resistance of the material. The power consumption is high, and the furnace is generally circular with three electrodes arranged in a triangle.
