Dead Burned Magnesia Quality Indicators

When specifying dead burned magnesia (DBM), buyers often fixate on the MgO percentage alone. In practice, three indicators together - bulk density, MgO content and sinter quality - determine whether a shipment will perform in a refractory lining. Understanding them prevents costly lining failures.

MgO Content and Purity

MgO content sets the ceiling for refractoriness and slag resistance. Higher MgO generally means better high-temperature performance, but only when impurity levels - especially CaO, SiO2 and Fe2O3 - are also controlled. The CaO/SiO2 ratio in particular influences the liquid phase formed at service temperature and therefore the lining's resistance to slag penetration.

Bulk Density as a Proxy

Bulk density reflects how thoroughly the material was sintered and how little residual porosity remains. A dense, well-sintered DBM resists slag infiltration and thermal spalling far better than a porous one of identical chemistry. For this reason many buyers specify a minimum bulk density alongside MgO.

Sintering and Crystal Growth

Dead burning is a high-temperature sintering step that grows large, stable periclase crystals. Under-fired material shrinks and reacts in service, accelerating wear. Buyers should ask about sintering temperature and look for consistent grain integrity. HOLY's DBM is sintered to deliver the bulk density and MgO consistency refractory producers require.

Grain Size and Grading

Refractory formulations need graded DBM: fine powder for gunning, granular for ramming, lump for brick. A matched grain-size distribution packs densely and sinters uniformly during heat-up. Specify the distribution for each fraction rather than ordering a single generic grade.

What to Check on Every Lot

Avoid disputes by requesting MgO, CaO/SiO2, bulk density, grain-size analysis and a sintering statement with each delivery. Independent inspection adds assurance for critical campaigns. HOLY documents every shipment and accepts third-party verification.

HOLY Perspective

HOLY (CNMGO Group Limited) manufactures dead burned magnesia, fused magnesia and CCM at Dashiqiao, Liaoning, exporting to 50+ countries. For DBM buyers, we recommend qualifying on MgO, impurity ratio and bulk density together - the three indicators that actually predict lining life.
