Understanding MgO Reactivity: The Citric Acid Test

Two magnesium oxide samples can both test at 92 percent MgO and behave as completely different products in your process. The difference is reactivity - how fast the oxide dissolves and neutralises in an acidic environment. The standard way the industry measures it is the citric acid test, also called citric acid activity, and understanding it lets buyers specify performance instead of just chemistry.

How the Test Works

The principle is simple. A fixed mass of ground MgO is added to a citric acid solution containing a pH indicator, the suspension is stirred at a controlled temperature, and the time is recorded until the acid is neutralised and the indicator changes colour. Faster colour change means faster dissolution and higher reactivity. Exact mass, acid concentration and endpoint vary between laboratories, so the number is only comparable if the method is stated.

Reading Typical Numbers

In broad terms, highly reactive light burned magnesia for wastewater or rapid-pH applications may show activity in tens of seconds to around two minutes. Medium-reactivity material, suitable for fertiliser granulation, animal feed and many industrial uses, falls in the range of several minutes. Dead burned magnesia sintered above 1500 C has grown periclase crystals and may take tens of minutes or effectively fail to react within the test window. Always ask for units and method on the COA.

What Actually Controls Reactivity

Reactivity is set in the kiln. Calcination temperature is the dominant variable: as magnesite decomposes below roughly 900 C the resulting oxide has a disordered structure and high internal surface area. Push higher, toward 1100-1300 C, and the periclase crystallites sinter and grow, cutting surface area and reactivity. Reported BET specific surface areas range from over 50 square metres per gram for very active grades down to under 1 for sintered material. Mill retention time, kiln residence time and impurities that form low-melting phases all shift the result as well.

Particle Size Interacts With It

Dissolution is a surface phenomenon, so grinding affects the measured result as much as kiln conditions do. A 200 mesh powder dissolves faster than coarse granular material of identical chemistry. That is why the specification should always state both the reaction time and the sieve analysis. Comparing the reactivity of a 325 mesh powder against a 0-1 mm granular tells you nothing useful.

Specifying for the Application

Match reactivity to process requirements. Wastewater neutralisation and acid spill response want the fastest available grade to shorten retention time and lower dose. Animal feed wants medium reactivity for steady rumen availability. Fertiliser manufacture and magnesium-based cements want controlled reactivity so setting or granulation is predictable. Refractory users deliberately want the opposite property, low reactivity with high crystal maturity, achieved through sintering or fusion.

Verifying Reactivity Yourself

Ask the supplier to ship a retained sample from the actual lot and have it tested by an independent laboratory using the same method that appears on the COA. Sample from several bags or several points in the bulk lot, since fines and coarse particles react differently. There is also a shelf-life effect: magnesium oxide slowly hydrates and carbonates in humid storage, so a pallet held for months may test slower than it did at dispatch. Retest after long storage before attributing a process upset to the kiln.
