Refractory Raw Material Outlook 2027: DBM and FM

Refractory makers are already building 2027 raw material programmes, and the two magnesia families at the centre of them - dead burned magnesia (DBM) and fused magnesia (FM) - face different dynamics. Sintered DBM tracks bulk steel and cement refractory demand while competing for kiln capacity; FM answers to the availability of electric furnace time and high-grade feed. Both sit on the same underlying constraint: magnesite supply out of Liaoning.

Demand Side Going Into 2027

Basic refractories follow steel output, ladle and converter campaigns, and cement kiln lining schedules. Even flat steel production sustains healthy refractory consumption because lining replacement is driven by campaign cycles rather than tonnage. Ladle working linings consume 90-92 percent MgO DBM with a CaO to SiO2 ratio around 2:1 giving low-melting silicate phases; the hotter zones and the most aggressive slags step up to 95-97 percent MgO, and critical areas to high-purity FM at 96-99 percent MgO.

Specification Points That Decide Value

Grade labels are shorthand; the numbers that matter are MgO content, the CaO/SiO2 ratio, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 levels, bulk density, apparent porosity and grain size distribution. Typical sintered grades reach 3.20-3.35 grams per cubic centimetre bulk density, while fused material achieves larger periclase crystals, higher density and lower porosity, giving better slag penetration resistance. A two-point improvement in the CaO/SiO2 ratio often buys more campaign life than a two-point increase in MgO.

Supply and Cost Drivers

Magnesite ore availability, mining permits and environmental compliance in the Dashiqiao district set the ceiling for the whole chain. Energy is the second driver: sintering is fuel-intensive and electric arc fusion for FM consumes several thousand kilowatt-hours per tonne, so power tariffs move the fused price faster than the sintered price. Yields depend on ore quality, meaning high-purity grades carry a disproportionate cost premium in tight years.

Practical Buying Tactics

Three habits reduce exposure. First, qualify two or three supply routes rather than one, including both sintered and fused options where the brick formulation permits. Second, split annual volume - half on a fixed-price contract, the remainder reviewed quarterly - instead of betting everything on spot. Third, hold one campaign's worth of safety stock for the critical grade, because the cost of an unplanned reline dwarfs the carrying cost of the raw material.

Grain Logistics Matter Too

Refractory plants consume a size portfolio, not a single product: fines at 200 or 325 mesh, mid fractions at 0-1 mm and 1-3 mm, and coarse aggregate at 3-5 mm and 5-15 mm. Ordering the full range from one source keeps chemistry and fired history consistent across the brick, which stabilises pressing behaviour and fired properties. Mixed shipments also consolidate freight and reduce per-tonne logistics cost.

Validating Before You Lock Volume

Specification compliance is necessary but not sufficient. Qualify a new source through a plant trial: press production bricks or castables from the candidate magnesia alongside your incumbent, fire them on the same schedule, and compare cold crushing strength, modulus of rupture, apparent porosity and slag resistance under identical conditions. Confirm that the supplier's XRF impurity figures agree with your own wet chemistry, since the two methods can differ enough to change a grade classification.

HOLY Perspective

HOLY (CNMGO Group Limited) produces DBM and FM at Dashiqiao with graded fractions from 325 mesh through 5-15 mm, exporting from Dalian to more than 50 countries. For 2027 planning our advice is to lock volume for the fractions you cannot substitute and keep flexibility where the design allows it. Share your MgO target, impurity limits and grading schedule and our team will quote against a twelve-month programme.
